Make friends with winter - a great set of cross country trails just a few minutes from the centre of town.

This huge tract of privately held land was rescued from an oblivion of exploitation and has become one of the world's earliest and finest examples of how to rebuild a forest and make a buck at the same time. Home of an amazingly diverse set of attractions, including the Walk in the Clouds canopy tour and the wolf centre, camplng, fishing, trails for walking and biking, an astronomical observatory and... a submarine! Unfortunately the sub is now grounded, apparently because the government can't figure out how to regulate it.

Does it need any introduction? It's a huge park and you can easily spend a week or more there, at various levels of engagement. A quick sampler, and a personal favourite, is a short canoe trip up the Oxtounge River to Ragged Falls, accessible from the western border of the park. A canoe can be rented at the point of entry, no need to transport it on wheels.
